Sale Docks presenta una mostra personale dell’artista e film-maker egiziano Philip Rizk. La mostra prevede due installazioni video progettate a partire dai più recenti film di Rizk Terrible: Sounds (2022) e Mapping Lessons (2020).
Mapping Lessons verrà anche proiettato integralmente nel corso di un evento/presentazione a cui sarà presente l’artista.
Terrible Sounds è una rilettura delle immagini che rimandano all'apertura della Tomba di Tutankhamoun. La prima apertura risale al 1922 e fu eseguita dall’esploratore britannico Howard Carter; poi, nel 1924 un'élite egiziana assetata di potere riaprire “ufficialmente” la tomba. Per questi uomini, la tomba dell'antico faraone ha giocato un ruolo significativo nelle loro ideologie concorrenti di "liberazione" nazionale dell'Egitto.
In Mapping Lessons viaggiamo con K attraverso il tempo e lo spazio in un Medio Oriente colonizzato. Questo film-saggio mette in dialogo le lotte, dal primo periodo sovietico alla Spagna del 1936, dalla resistenza vietnamita alla Comune di Parigi, fino alla rivoluzione siriana del 2011. Il tutto con l'obiettivo di prepararci alla prossima volta.
Philip Rizk è un regista e scrittore del Cairo, basato a Berlino. Nei suoi film sperimenta metodi per "rendere strano l'abituale". In Out on the Street (2015) utilizza la performance, nei suoi film di found footage Mapping Lessons (2020) e Terrible Sounds (2022) sperimenta la tecnica del montaggio. In un mondo che si sta disgregando, una domanda che attraversa i progetti di Rizk è: "Come ci prepariamo a ciò che verrà?". Rizk è membro del collettivo video Mosireen, dietro l'archivio 858.ma. Tra i suoi scritti figurano il saggio "2011 is not 1968: a letter to an onlooker" (Il 2011 non è il 1968: lettera a uno spettatore) e il libro scritto insieme a Jasmina Metwaly On Trials: A Manual on the Theatre of Law (Archive Books, 2021). Sale Docks presents a solo exhibition by Egyptian artist and film-maker Philip Rizk. The exhibition includes two video installations designed from Rizk's most recent films: Terrible Sounds (2022) and Mapping Lessons (2020).
Mapping Lessons will also be screened in full during an evening event, in the presence of the artist
Terrible Sounds is a re-assessment of images around the openings of the Tomb of Tutankhamoun, first in the year 1922 by British explorer Howard Carter, then in 1924 when an Egyptian elite pining for power re-opened the tomb. For these men, this ancient Pharaoh’s tomb played a significant role in their competing ideologies of the national “liberation” of Egypt.
In Mapping Lessons we travel with K through time and place to a “Middle East” being colonized. This essay film puts struggles in conversation, from the early days of the Soviets, 1936 Spain, the Vietnamese resistance and the Paris Commune to the Syrian Revolution in 2011. All with the aim of preparing us for the next time.
Philip Rizk is a film-maker & writer from Cairo living in Berlin. In his films he experiments with methods of “making the habitual strange.” In Out on the Street (2015) he uses performance, in his found footage films Mapping Lessons (2020) and Terrible Sounds (2022) he experiments with the technique of montage. In a world that is breaking down, a question that runs throughout Rizk’s projects is, “how do we prepare ourselves for what is to come?” Rizk is a member of the Mosireen video collective behind the archive 858.ma. His writings include the essay “2011 is not 1968: a letter to an onlooker,” and the co-authored book with Jasmina Metwaly On Trials: A Manual on the Theatre of Law (Archive Books, 2021). He irregularly teaches in classrooms and workshops. He is a 2022/23 fellow of The Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme. You can follow his work @ filfilfilm.com
